Give Me Job!

Background

"Give Me Job!"

When our friend Zak wants a job, he shouts it to the sky and then goes out hunting Buffalo. He may be well-fed, but he doesn't have a job. If you've never done a job hunt before, here's how to get a job:

Steps You Need to Turn "Give Me a Job" into "I have a Job!"

  1. Gather the materials you need to organize your job search. Unless you get organized, you run the risk of not having the right information available at the right time.
  2. Make your initial choices about how to narrow your job search enough to make it doable, but keep it broad enough to give you options. Decide on two or more of these: industry, geography, job title/function, and company culture.
  3. Create a very short sales pitch you can teach your network that will help them understand what kind of jobs would be a perfect fit.
  4. Draft an initial resume and cover letter you'll use as a starting point for resumes and cover letters that you send out.
  5. Create a daily routine for yourself. Decide how many new people you will reach out to each day.
  6. Begin networking by reaching out to people you know and training them to be your sales force.
  7. Each day, design today's action plan around the activities that, when you think about them, you think "these are the things that will give me a job."

The "Give Me a Job" Activities

Other than simply saying "Give me a job" to everyone you meet (which isn't likely to actually get you a job), you'll be doing a lot of different things to bring you and the job closer together:

  • You'll reach out to people in your network to turn them into sales people.
  • You'll go on informational interviews to learn more about your potential job.
  • You'll customize your resume and cover letter for each opportunity you investigate.
  • You'll interview for the job.
  • You'll follow up after job interviews.
  • You'll negotiate job offers; and finally
  • You'll start your new job!
Why Turning "Give Me a Job" into "I have a job!" takes structure

During your job hunt, you might be working on any or all of those activities at the same time. You need a tool that helps you keep taking action on whatever you need, each day.
